Some of the world's biggest carmakers ​on Friday broadly won ‌the first stage of a mammoth legal battle over ​whether some of ​their diesel vehicles contained prohibited "defeat ⁠devices" which limited ​emissions control systems.

German carmaker Mercedes-Benz said on Wednesday sales in its core ​car business continued to fall ‌in the second quarter, declining 8% year-on-year due to intense competition in China.

Mercedes has partnered with German drone interceptor firm Tytan Technologies. It becomes the latest carmaker to turn to the defense industry to revive its ailing fortunes.

Major automakers backed the Environmental ​Protection Agency proposal to ‌delay enforcement of a regulation requiring significant ​cuts in air ​pollution from vehicles for ⁠two years but want ​the agency to ​move quickly to rewrite the rules.
