Germany's Commerzbank , fending off a possible takeover by Italy's UniCredit , said on Tuesday that net profit in 2025 fell slightly as it incurred restructuring costs, but it beat analysts' expectations.

Commerzbank CEO Bettina Orlopp tells CNBC in Davos she supports banking consolidation when it creates value, but suggested a deal with UniCredit would not be sensible given Commerzbank's high valuation. She adds that international investor interest in Germany is rising as Europe's largest economy overhauls its spending and investment policies.

After a stellar 2025, investors expect shares in European banks to keep heading higher in 2026, supported by strong earnings and, crucially, cost savings stemming from artificial intelligence.
